How technology can improve sustainability

"Towards Sustainability" is no longer just a slogan; it's a powerful environmental, economic, and social force that's altering our lives in practically every manner. This is evident across the corporate community, where adopting sustainable practises is now crucial to the business operations as the adverse impacts of climate change grow more visible and alarming, with the potential to disrupt everything from supply chains to profitability. Thus, there are a few ways technology can help sustainability.

1. Less paper, more efficiency

Office printing and paper waste can be reduced with the use of managed print services and process automation. According to Mashable, the average office worker uses 10,000 sheets of paper every year. Nowadays, printing excessively is no longer necessary thanks to solutions like collaborative suites, real-time document editing software, and cloud storage.

2. Going cloud-based

While many firms prefer to work "in the cloud," some government initiatives have encouraged others to embrace the technology available. When compared to running an internal data centre, cloud computing consumes less energy. Cloud solutions' main advantages are flexibility and accessibility. Reduced energy expenses and environmental effects, on the other hand, are substantial.

3. Virtual Reality (VR)

Since the 1980s, when we fantasised about watching a movie to feel "there," virtual reality has been a popular concept. Since VR can genuinely let us experience moments and feel other people's emotions, technology has come in full force and is having a significant impact on the social and sustainability worlds. Charities have used virtual reality to raise donations and awareness. In the mean time, businesses have conducted field tests and first-hand feedback via VR to provide critical data that can support employee training as well as product and business development.

4. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence is already being used by large corporations like Google and Microsoft to improve the sustainability of their services. For example, Google developed an AI that teaches itself to utilise the least amount of energy possible to cool its data centres, resulting in a 30% reduction in energy use on average

5. Transportation

The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is speeding up thanks to the automotive sector. Governments all over the world are providing incentives and enacting legislation to encourage businesses and individuals to purchase electric vehicles. In fact, between 2019 and 2030, the EV market is expected to expand at a CAGR of more than 21%
